The Carvery
by pete marshall
Pride & dreams were laid upon
a smorgasbord of shattered souls,
yet dude was smooth and played his tune
as time would pass and pay its toll.
Hope was breathed as clocks would tick
whilst stifled air would fill the room,
faces strained in summers heat
to force a smile beyond the gloom.
Silence fell on nervous smirks
who doubted all their wasted years
that lived a life beyond respect
whilst hiding from financial fear.
Cards were played upon a desk
as jokers tried to pass the time
looks were glanced with eyes ahead,
the scythe was splayed across the line
and all were left with mouths aghast
as blood would flow across the floor,
The Carver claimed these wasting souls
then licked his lips, their life no more.

Very cool, Pete. Ask not for whom the bell tolls. And don't try to keep it from tolling. When it's your time, it's your time. Terrific. And congratulations to you and the rest of the team on your Shorty Award.
Cheers, mate!
Another great one for the weekly poetry feast, Pete - quite a full course. It's an honor and a privilege to share a corner of the blogosphere with you, my friend; cheers for all your hard work that's helped get One Stop where it is today!
Hopefully the Shortys mean big things in the future for us all!
Well layered metaphor as scythes will cut in many ways and blood can leak from many wounds..real and figurative.
I second what Chris said, much thanks for your hard work here at onestoppoetry. Your vision and dedication may help open doors closed to poets and poetry for so long. Whether in the US or abroad, our writers are of the people, by the people and for the people and deserve to be read and to be known!

Wow Pete, you really hit the ball out of the park with this one. Very powerful metaphor, tight as a drum, effortless flow too and building to a hell of a finish. Nice One Shot my friend.

Let's be honest, judging from the pic, I dare say some were willing victims...love the finish. Again, so impressed by how effortless you make the rhyme seem. Perfectly tuned and fitted. Another wonderful visit here this evening thanks to Oneshotwednesday, and much thanks to you, dear founding father, and your mates for providing us this forum. A standing ovation delivered from this Maritime shore.
