My Coney Island Baby

My Coney Island Baby

Hedonistic summer dreams
within this sandscape world
Crazy Feeling's rising high
and tricks with Charley's Girl

Parasols that hide our shame
for She’s My Best Friend’s pearl
sequinned lace, her painted face
and Kicks that made us whirl

His Gift was she or maybe me
Oooohhh Baby take this pain
in summers heat where lovers meet
they play their heady games

Nobodys Business on this beach
androgynous dreams were maybe
A fluttered fan, a soft held hand
my Coney Island Baby…….

The wonderful image is taken by Danielle Kelly and simply titled "Coney Island". It is featured today on One Shoot Sunday, part of One Stop Poetry, and forms their picture prompt. Check out the amazing interview with Danielle Kelly whilst you are there too.

It's not a party unless Pete Marshall shows up! lol Your poem reminds me of a nostalgic seaside tune. Excellent flow and very witty. Happy New Year!

Oh, I loved your witty little poem. I even had to get out my dictionary, and had a chuckle with the word, 'androgynous'.

Beautifully penned,,, got my attention, I haven't been to Coney Island in years, nostalgic perhaps more so that many can relate to their own 'Coney Island' paradise in this wonderful lyrical poem.
Happy New Year!

pete, have you ever heard the Kinks' Muswell Hillbilly album? It's a collection of bizarre story songs, everything from an ode to tea drinking, a ballad about Holloway Jail, a song about the surrey with the fringe on top sung by a london char--for some reason this poem reminds me of that collection's eclectic and riotous sense of fun, laced with just a bit of the dark.

You bring back memories of strolling on the boardwalk, then going to the rides and getting on the roller coaster. Then the long subway ride back to the Bronx. Coney Island - my childhood playground.

Coney Island with a dash of Brighton thrown in and hints (just little flashes) of Fire Island. Wicked and winsome, your talents are boundless. I love everything you write Pete. You know that. Thanks. Gay

Does Lou Reed know about this? ;-)

I've got to agree with Dustus here...quite song-like. In fact, I can't visualize it without also putting a tune to it. Flirtatious and playful, with good rhyme and flow. Fun way to kick off the new year!

You are such a voracious flirt, and this is why I love you! Nice rhymes, flow, and a playful wink at the end of the last stanza, nicely done Pete x

I agree with Adam on the "excellent flow and wit" of your poem, Pete! I love the references to songs, too, and ditties perhaps, and the rhyme that never fails. Thanks!

ok...i fess up..LOL...so many of you felt this reminded them of a song..and felt the music tune...being english...Coney Island means only one thing to me..Lou Reed..when i saw the photo..of the "lady" at coney island beach i had to pay homage to Lou himself...

Coney Island Baby is an album he released in 1975...the track on this album are;

"Crazy Feeling"
"Charley's Girl"
"She's My Best Friend"
"Kicks"
"A Gift"
"Ooohhh Baby"
"Nobody's Business"
"Coney Island Baby"

all titles are in the verse in running order...i just built the rest of the poem around it...so there you go..my secrets out..but what a wonderful picture..cheers pete

Excellent, Pete. You blend a kind of shame (or embarrassment) with an in-your-face attitude. Like Coney Island.
